Online Video Makes Learning The Unicycle That Much Easier

This new video from TED talks about how online video is enabling people from all around the world to more quickly and easily learn things – like how to dance, ride a unicycle, or play a musical instrument. The video isn’t really about unicycles, but they do use learning to ride a unicycle and perform unicycle tricks as an example. In reality, the video is more about the future of online video and how web video can be used to learn things as super fast speeds and how it can be used to push the current boundaries of any particular subject, interest group or sport. If you’re up for an intellectual look at the potential uses for online video, and you are a unicyclist who is either currently using video to document your moves or someone who wants to use video to share your unicycles tricks, then this is one video I highly recommend you watch.

Kick Up Unicycle Trick

The Kick Up (also called the Kick Up and Go) is a basic unicycle trick that anyone can learn to do.

To start, you want to lay the unicycle on the ground, put on foot on the exposed pedal and the other foot below the seat of the unicycle. Then, putting all your weight on the pedal foot, you want to kick up in the other foot, thereby forcing the unicycle to stand upright. The unicycle will then quickly come to an upright vertical position, where it will slam into the inner portion of your leg. As this happens, you want to quickly sit down on the saddle and begin riding.

There are two difficult parts to mastering this unicycle trick.

The first hard part is learning where to put your foot on the pedal when just starting to perform this trick. You don’t want to place your foot entirely on the pedal, but instead, place it at a 45 degree angle – half-way on the pedal and half-way on the crank. This feels incredibly awkward at first, but you will learn to get over this uncomfortable situation as you practice and progress.

The second hardest part about perfecting this unicycle trick is getting the unicycle to the point where you can actually sit down and pedal off. Once you master getting the unicycle between your legs, however, you are more than half-way there. Once you get the saddle of your unicycle between your legs, all you have to do is perfect your balance, lean forward and pedal – just as you would in any other circumstance.

How To Ride A Unicycle: The Basics

Watch as the experts from Expert Village teach you the basics of how to ride a unicycle.

Once you get yourself seated on your unicycle with one leg positioned in the 6 o’clock position and your arm positioned on some nearby object (like a fence, wall, chair, friend, etc.) you want to just sit there and practice balancing.

The next step is to actually rock back and forth on the unicycle. To do this, you want to position one foot in the 6 o’clock position. This is going to be your dominate foot, which is giving you the most control over your unicycle. The other foot it just a guide. In this position, you want to rock back and forth while at the same time still holing on to something so you can better keep your balance. Do this at least 100 times before moving on to the next step. This rocking back and forth motion is done to simply get you feeling more comfortable on your unicycle as you ride it.

Once you have become comfortable rocking your unicycle with your right foot in the dominate 6 o’clock position, switch sides and do the same thing with the other foot.

Practice this every day for a week or more and you will quickly feel comfortable on your unicycle and when it comes to actually riding your unicycle, these exercises will enable you to ride that much easier.
